The announcement that MTV's smash hit The Jersey Shore would not be picked up for another season came as a disappointment to many. Sure, those who absolutely cannot stand to be out of the loop on what life is like for spoiled renegades from New Jersey can still watch Snooki & JWoww, but The Situation and the rest of the gang are about to be relegated to the TV history books.
In an interview with TV Guide, MTV programming executive vice president Chris Linn said the decision was because the cast just started going their own separate ways. He also said the show was no longer genuine - as though it was at one point.
"Their lives are changing, like any young adult. Nicole has the baby, relationships are brewing, they're taking those next steps of young adulthood. The show started out as an authentic phenomenon of what occurs when young people get together to live in a summer shore house. Over time your life starts to move on in ways that take you in different directions. They're changing and we've always wanted to be able to go out on a high note," said Linn.
It was reported that some of the housemates ended up pocketing something like $150,000 per episode, which made the show much more expensive than when it started. Of course, it also started earning a lot more money thanks to the sky-high ratings. From Linn, it sounded like this had less to do with money and more to do with the logistics of keeping the dynamic team of sleazebags together.
"We're still in the middle of the era of Jersey Shore and it won't be too long until there's another era. Our audience tends to choose a show or two at a time, and then we move to something that feels completely different. I'm excited about what's to come," Linn said.
