Tom Arnold Makes Surprise Appearance At Roseanne Roast

Aug 7 2012, 7:00am CDT | by

Despite firm reports he would not be a part of the show

The full roast of Roseanne Barr won't air on Comedy Central until next Sunday, but it was taped in Los Angeles over the weekend, and reports from people who were in the audience are continuing to stream through.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the night was that Barr's estranged ex-husband Tom Arnold made an appearance. It was previously reoprted that he would not be present for the event, but now it seems that was just a ruse to make his cameo even more noteworthy.

"We have not been in the same room for 18 years," Arnold said after he came up on stage, shocking Barr who had no idea he would be making an appearance at the roast.

By all accounts, his comments were not too painful. He poked fun at her former overweight self and the tumbles their marriage went through, but ended with a sincere message of thanks for jumpstarting his career.

But make no mistake - the evening was filled with barbs and insults from all the celebrity roast guests.

Seth Green, Ellen Barkin, Wayne Brady, Gilbert Gottfried, Jeffrey Ross, and Carrie Fisher were among the individual all taking their turns making fun of Roseanne, whose physical appearance has incredibly transformed over the last several years and whose work has taken on a more philanthropic mission.

As a result, it was reported that the vibe of the room was one of fun and folly as opposed to any sort of legitimate resentment or patronizing of Barr.
