Animal Planet's Next Show Is "Eel Of Fortune"

Yes. Seriously.

Don't expect a smarmy and personality-deprived host or a 55-year-old letter-turner to show up on this new show. Eel of Fortune is poised to be a serious reality show with a much more interesting prize up for grabs than the game show with a similar name.

After finding success with the intoxicatingly bizarre reality shows Hillbilly Handfishin' and River Monsters, among others, Animal Planet has revealed to TV Guide that its next big project will be following a group of New England fisherman on their hunt for an elusive creature known as the elver eel.

The specific kind of eel is considered a top-notch delicacy in some parts of the world, and is becoming exceedingly rare. What once was the kind of seafood that upper-class families splurged on once in a while has become something that only the most elite can enjoy.

That is to say, the price of a pound of elver eel has risen from $50 per pound to $2,400. Fishermen have been known to sell in excess of $40,000 worth of elver eel in a single haul.

Incidentally, the "Eel of Fortune" title is still a working title. The network may change it if it comes to the realization that it's a bit too cheesy.

It's set for a preliminary premiere date of some time in 2013.
