NBC is reportedly not happy with the ratings of the Today show as the 2012 Summer Olympics kick off. It's a time when the morning show should be basking in the glory of NBC's monopolistic coverage of the international games, but instead apparently executives are scrambling to fix what is apparently an even steeper decline in viewer interest after it ousted Ann Curry as cohost.
NBC, which made the almost baffling move to give a huge raise to Matt Lauer, kick off Curry, and fill the cohost spot with relative unknown Savannah Guthrie, has apparently decided to fly Hoda Kotb to London specifically because Today's ratings haven't been what the network expected.
Kotb normally anchors only in the extended hours of the broadcast and was scheduled to not even be on NBC during the entire Olympic run, but Guthrie is apparently having trouble keeping viewers' attention.
RadarOnline.com reports that it heard from a source that Curry feels vindicated by the show's viewership problem. The anonymous source was quoted as saying:
"Ann feels completely vindicated by the 'Today' show's poor ratings since she left. She feels she was fired completely unfairly and wasn't given a fair shot at the gig."
Many are still scratching their heads trying to figure out how NBC thinks Guthrie will somehow suck in millions more viewers. If it can't happen during the Olympics, when will it happen?
