SERIES AND EPISODE | The Walking Dead, “Live Bait”
TITLE | “The Last Pale Light in the West”
ARTIST | Ben Nichols
ALBUM | The Last Pale Light in the West (2009)
WHY IT ROCKED | This titular cut from Lucero lead singer Ben Nichols’ first solo project, a concept album based on Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, sounds like it was written to describe the Governor: “In my hands/I hold the ashes/In my veins/Black pitch runs.” The song was the perfect way to reintroduce last season’s big bad in a new, possibly redemptive light.

SERIES AND EPISODE | Boardwalk Empire, “Farewell Daddy Blues”
TITLE | “Farewell Daddy Blues”
ARTIST | Ma Rainey
ALBUM | Farewell Daddy Blues (1924)
WHY IT ROCKED | Margot Bingham delivered a heartbreaking performance as Daughter Maitland throughout Season 4. The cherry on top of her incredible work was her outstanding covers of Prohibition-era tunes, culminating in this final performance during a season-ending montage./>/>/>/>

SERIES AND EPISODE | Grey’s Anatomy, “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word”
TITLE | “She”
ARTIST | Laura Mvula
ALBUM | Sing to the Moon (2013)
WHY IT ROCKED | This melancholic tale of a woman on her own accompanies Callie’s final voiceover monologue as she awaits the jury’s decision in her malpractice suit. She’s found not guilty… and yet she (and we) feel so sad./>/>/>/>

SERIES AND EPISODE | Person of Interest, “The Devil’s Share”
TITLE | “Hurt”
ARTIST | Johnny Cash
ALBUM | American IV: The Man Comes Around (2002)
WHY IT ROCKED | The Man in Black’s cover of this Nine Inch Nails rock ballad accompanies the episode’s cold open, in which those nearest and dearest to Detective Carter react to and reflect on her death. Thanks in part to this stellar song choice, their hurt became our hurt./>/>/>/>

SERIES AND EPISODE | The Vampire Diaries, “Dead Man on Campus”
TITLE | “The Other Side”
ARTIST | David Gray
ALBUM | A New Day at Midnight (2002)
WHY IT ROCKED | As Stefan stops Katherine from heading to the “other side” after reading her suicide note, this tragic appeal to a lost loved one plays and breaks our hearts with each note./>/>/>/>

SERIES AND EPISODE | Sons of Anarchy, “You Are My Sunshine
TITLE | “You Are My Sunshine”
ARTIST | Jamey Johnson, Twiggy Ramirez and Shooter Jennings
ALBUM | You Are My Sunshine (2013)
WHY IT ROCKED | This haunting, dissonant version of a traditionally cheery song left us feeling broken and anxious going in to the show’s season finale, in which Jax’s world is likely to continue come crashing down around him./>/>/>/>

SERIES AND EPISODE | The Mindy Project, “Christmas Party Sex Trap”
TITLE | “Try Again”
ARTIST | Aaliyah
ALBUM | Romeo Must Die: The Album (2000)
WHY IT ROCKED | Danny’s adorable Secret Santa gift for Mindy — performing a choreographed dance to this R&B hit — was possibly both the goofiest and the sexiest the show and Chris Messina have been. Danny, even though your almost-kiss was interrupted and Mindy ended up mackin’ on lawyer Cliff, just dust yourself off and try again!/>/>/>/>

SERIES AND EPISODE | American Horror Story, “The Sacred Taking”
TITLE | “Season of the Witch
ARTIST | Donovan
ALBUM | Sunshine Superman (1966)
WHY IT ROCKED | It was never a question of whether this song would be featured in AHS‘s literal season of the witch, just a question of when. And it finally happened as Fiona is faced with the return of a certain starlet./>/>/>/>
