James Devaney/WireImage(LOS ANGELES) -- Tom Cruise stated in a deposition taken in Los Angeles on Sept. 9 that he maintains a close relationship with his daughter Suri, despite his divorce from her mother Katie Holmes and an intense schedule that had him filming back-to-back movies in the wake of his divorce.

Cruise's declaration was filed Tuesday in Los Angeles as part of his $50 million defamation case against Bauer Publishing Co. Cruise filed suit against Life & Style and In Touch magazines after they ran cover stories in 2012 that claimed he had "abandoned" his daughter.

According to People.com, Cruise admits in his deposition that he didn't visit his daughter in person for more than 100 days, between Aug. 4, 2012 and Thanksgiving of that same year. Cruise explains, "Unfortunately in this situation it was impossible."  That summer he took Suri on a week-long father-daughter vacation to Disney World, but right after that he had to start filming All You Need Is Kill in London.

Cruise states, "Things change and there is different agreements, like in any divorce, where you work out schedules. It's just a different set of circumstances. It certainly does not mean that I've abandoned my daughter."

The actor said he called Suri almost every day, but he agreed that phone calls were a poor substitute for a parent being there in person.

Cruise also revealed in the deposition that Suri is no longer practicing his religion, Scientology.  However, when asked if Holmes left him to "protect" Suri from Scientology, Cruise responded, "I find that question offensive...There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion."

The actor also stated that his older children, Isabella and Connor, haven't had contact with Holmes since the divorce.  Their mother is actress Nicole Kidman.

Cruise's lawyers want Bauer Publishing to admit they didn't have any sources to support claims about the actor's role in Suri’s life, and Bauer's attorneys want a judge to reject Cruise's suit.
