Scandal Scoop: Which Gladiator Will Lisa Kudrow 'Mentor'? How Will Paul Adelstein Surprise You?

Oct 9 2013, 1:26pm CDT | by TV Line

Lisa Kudrow will make Friends with one of Olivia Pope’s Gladiators when she kicks off her Scandal run on Oct. 24. Shondaland vet Paul Adelstein, meanwhile, is sure to surprise those who think of him as Private Practice‘s Dr. Cooper Freedman.

Speaking with TVLine at the ABC drama’s Saks event last week in New York City, Darby Stanchfield, who plays Abby, revealed that she is among those getting to work with Kudrow, saying, “Lisa has a really nice role” as a powerful and smart politician.

“Our characters get along,” she added. In fact, “She’s almost like a mentor. Not quite like Olivia, but Abby admires the heck out of her, so it was fun to play.”

Stanchfield also attested that Scandal viewers will not be seeing any version of Kudrow’s flighty Friend. “You’re not getting Phoebe. It’s kind of amazing what you are going to get. You’re getting the spicy version in that variety pack.”

We then suggested to Stanchfield that another of this fall’s guest stars, Army Wives redhead Sally Pressman, could play Abby’s sister or such, when she begins her own multi-episode arc in November. Stanchfield deferred the question to show boss Shonda Rhimes, who at the very minimum confirmed that Pressman and Stanchfield are not TV kin.

TVLine then presented Rhimes with the full list of Season 3 guest stars/recurring players — including Kudrow, Adelstein (who also debuts in late October), Pressman and Heroes‘ Jack Coleman — and invited her to dish on any one of the castings. Her pick: “Paul Adelstein is incredibly, crazy surprising in his role on Scandal,” she effused. “Like, you will not even recognize him.”
