The Primetime Emmy Awards Will Be Presented This Sunday

Sep 22 2013, 9:34am CDT | by ABC News Radio

Nino Munoz/CBS via Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards will be presented Sunday from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles.

Neil Patrick Harris will host the ceremony live on CBS, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern time and 5 p.m. Pacific time.

The Netflix series House of Cards has already made Emmy history, as the first program distributed exclusively online to receive a nomination. It has nine nods overall, including in the best drama category.

The other contenders for best drama are the category's reigning winner, Showtime's Homeland; AMC's Mad Men and Breaking Bad; HBO's Game of Thrones; and PBS' Downton Abbey. If Mad Men emerges victorious, it will set a record for the most wins in the category, with five.

Tom O'Neil, of the awards show website GoldDerby.com, says Breaking Bad is the front-runner for best drama. He says it would be an unusual choice because "it's not the kind of upscale, elitist show that normally wins, like The West Wing or Mad Men."

Homeland stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis picked up the Emmys for lead drama actress and lead drama actor, respectively, in 2012. Both have a chance to repeat on Sunday. Danes' biggest threat in her category could be Scandal star Kerry Washington. If Washington wins, she would become the first-ever African-American to take the best drama actress prize.

Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul have both won acting Emmys in the past, and they're contenders again for best drama actor and best supporting drama actor, respectively.

Last year's winner for best comedy, ABC's Modern Family, is nominated again for that prize. It will oppose HBO's Girls and Veep, CBS' The Big Bang Theory, NBC's 30 Rock, and the FX series Louie. O'Neil believes there's a chance "Modern Family fatigue" has set in with voters, and that a cable series such as Louie or Veep could pick up a surprise win.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who claimed the Emmy for lead comedy actress last year for her role in Veep, is a strong bet to hold on to that title. However, the 2012 winner for lead comedy actor, Two and a Half Men's Jon Cryer, was snubbed this time around.

The FX series American Horror Story: Asylum has the most nominations of any series, with 17.

The list of presenters for the Emmys telecast includes Jon Hamm, Jimmy Fallon, Bob Newhart, Jim Parsons, Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Deschanel and Kerry Washington.

According to Deadline.com, the telecast will begin with an Oscars-style opening montage featuring Harris crossing over into various shows after binge-watching them. Harris would only tell ABC News Radio that he won't kick off the show with a big song-and-dance number, as he did when he hosted the Tony Awards earlier this year.

Harris explains, "I didn't feel like frankly spending the time trying to come up with something that was unique and different and didn't replicate what I had just done. It just seemed like I was suddenly not doing it for the love of the game, but trying to do something just for the sake of being different."

However, Harris says he will dance in a segment put together by all of the nominees for outstanding choreography.

Here are the nominees for the 10 leading categories. For a complete list of nominees, visit Emmys.com/nominations:
