LeAnn Rimes Performs "Amazing Grace" at MLK "Dream" Speech Anniversary

Aug 28 2013, 10:42pm CDT | by ABC News Radio

SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- Singer LeAnn Rimes took to the podium Wednesday to deliver a beautiful rendition of “Amazing Grace” in front of the thousands of people who descended upon Washington’s National Mall to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and the March on Washington that took place half a century ago.

The songstress took to Twitter on Tuesday expressing how privileged she felt to be included in the momentous day’s ceremonies.

“Do not know how I’m going to make it through singing Amazing Grace tmrw w/o crying,” Rimes tweeted. “I’m truly honored & humbled to be a part of tmrw’s event.”

President Obama, as well as former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, members of the King family, lawmakers and civil rights leaders including Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., who spoke at the 1963 march, all spoke at the event hosted by television personalities Soledad O’Brien and Hill Harper.

Oprah Winfrey and actors Jamie Foxx and Forest Whitaker also made appearances, along with musical performances by BeBe Winans, Natalie Grant, Carvin Winans and Marvin Winans, Identity4Pop, Peter and Paul, and Minister Wintley Phipps.

In addition to being the golden anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech, the date Aug. 28 holds special meaning to Rimes for personal reasons as well. It’s the singer’s 31st birthday.

"So many great things happened on Aug 28th,” she tweeted. “1. Martin Luther King’s I have a dream speech 2. My bday lol 3. Honey Boo Boo was born LOVE IT.”
