Stars Head to Barclays for MTV VMAs on Sunday

Aug 24 2013, 11:22am CDT | by ABC News Radio

Christopher Polk/Getty Images for DirecTV(NEW YORK) -- Returning to the East Coast for the first time since 2009, this Sunday's 30th MTV Video Music Awards will, for the first time, take place in Brooklyn, rather than in Manhattan.

The big draws this year will be the performances. On tap to open the show is Lady Gaga, in her first big public performance since she canceled her tour earlier this year due to a hip injury. Speaking to the U.K. radio station KISS FM, Gaga said of her performance, "I don't want to give any specifics, because of course I want everyone to be surprised, but it is the most physically challenging performance I've done...ever."

She added that the performance will be "beautiful" and "so indicative of me as an artist."  "We've been planning it for a very long time. I've been rehearsing every single day until my feet bleed," she gushed. "I'm so excited. I mean, I can't wait."  Gaga also pointed out that her tour was canceled after 99 performances, so she'll consider this one her 100th.  "It's kind of exciting. I've definitely have thought of nothing else since my show ended," she said of her return to the stage.

Closing the show will be Katy Perry, performing Roar outdoors, from an undisclosed location.  During that segment, the name of Katy's next single, voted on by fans, will be revealed./>/>/>/>

The most anticipated part of the night may be Justin Timberlake, who will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and is rumored to reunite on stage with pop group 'N SYNC.

Presenters include Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jared Leto, Kevin Hart, Emeli Sandé and A$AP Rocky.

Viewers will also get their first look at footage from the upcoming movie Divergent, presented by the movie's stars, Shailene Woodley and Theo James.

As for the awards, Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are tied for the most nominations, with six each. Bruno Mars has four; Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus and Thirty Seconds to Mars have three each. Fun is up for two trophies, including Best Pop Video for Carry On, which shows the group in various New York City locations.

Explaining their decision to set the clip in the band's hometown, frontman Nate Ruess tells ABC News Radio, "I think that that video shows a lot of who we are when we're at home. And New York is an important place as far as the album Some Nights is concerned because...lyrically when I think about it...I think of every scene and what the lyrics mean to me and they all take place in New York."/>/>
