Movie Review: "Despicable Me 2"

Jul 3 2013, 5:47am CDT | by

Comstock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- In Despicable Me 2, Steve Carell’s Gru is a changed man. No longer a super-villain who needs to be the baddest of the bad guys, he's now domesticated, with his three adorable adopted daughters, his hilarious gibberish-talking, tic-tac-looking minions, a freaky dog and an evil scientist assistant (Russell Brand) whose focus is now making jams and jellies.

It is, however, Gru's evil genius past that makes him the perfect candidate to help the Anti-Villain League.  A new threat is emerging and Gru is, apparently, the only person who can help. An AVL agent named Lucy (voiced by Kristen Wiig) is deployed to kidnap Gru and bring him back to headquarters, where he'll be forcibly recruited to help the cause.

AVL believes the mastermind behind this emerging threat works in a mall. Yes, a mall.  And that’s where Gru and Lucy will do their not-so-undercover work and, perhaps, fall in love, because that wouldn’t be predictable at all.

As he's fighting villains, he's also Gru the responsible dad who will do anything for his daughters, including dress up like a fairy princess for his youngest, Agnes.  On the flip side, he’s having trouble coping with eldest daughter Margo’s budding interest in boys.

And then there are the minions. If you’re a fan of the first movie then you're a fan of the minions, and they do not disappoint here.  Oh, of course your kids will be delighted with the return of the fart gun because, well, who under the age of ten doesn't love a fart gun?

While there’s really no redeeming educational value here, there’s no question that Despicable Me 2 is one of your more likeable family movies, with no shortage of laughs and heart.

'Saturday Night Live' And Saks Fifth Avenue Team Up To Dress You Like... Gilly?

Oct 14 2014 9:57am CDT | Source: Huffington Post

Saks Fifth Avenue's Key To The Cure campaign has donated millions of dollars to cancer research over the past 15 years. And while there may be nothing funny about that news, there is at least one thing to laugh about this year: the store's collaboration with "Saturday Night Live," which was announced back in June. As part of the partnership, Saks paired up with a slew of designers, such ...

'Love Is A Dream' With Jan Hooks And Phil Hartman Is The Perfect Way To Remember Them Both

Oct 10 2014 3:52pm CDT | Source: Huffington Post

There have been handful of times when "Saturday Night Live" made us cry instead of laugh, and those moments stand out as some of the most special in the show's 40-year history. There was Kristen Wiig's emotional send-off featuring Arcade Fire and the entire cast, and Steve Martin's unforgettable tribute to Gilda Radner when he hosted the day after her death (which, of cours ...

Reporter's Interview With Kristen Wiig And Bill Hader Is Hilariously Awkward

Sep 27 2014 12:43pm CDT | Source: Huffington Post

This reporter probably should've seen "The Skeleton Twins" before he interviewed the film's stars, Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader. But if he had, we wouldn't have this hilariously awkward moment. News anchor Chris Parente starts off his interview with Hader and Wiig by asking them to describe the film's plot. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, Parente asks Wiig, "Kristen, I am thinking, on this program, of doing the news completely full-frontal, comp ...
