Jennifer Lopez Criticized for Performing for Turkmenistan Dictator

Jul 1 2013, 7:06am CDT | by

Theo Wargo/WireImage for Tommy Hilfiger(NEW YORK) -- Jennifer Lopez performed in Avaza, Turkmenistan, on Saturday at a birthday event for Turkmenistan leader Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.  The former American Idol judge sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" to the dictator, who controls the country's regime.

Turkmenistan, which is a former Soviet Bloc country, has been cited by human rights organizations for numerous abuses and for its authoritarian leadership.

In a statement to ABC News on Sunday, Lopez's representative said the event in Turkmenistan was a "private corporate event" held by the China National Petroleum Corporation that was "not political in nature" and was not "government sponsored."

The statement continues, "The event was vetted by her representatives, had there been knowledge of human right issues of any kind, Jennifer would not have attended."

The rep further explains, "The China National Petroleum Corporation made a last minute 'birthday greeting' request prior to Jennifer taking the stage.  This was not stipulated in her contract but she graciously obliged the China National Petroleum Corporation request."

The non-profit Human Rights Foundation criticized Lopez's appearance at the party. />/>/>/>/>/>/>/>

Human Rights Foundation president Thor Halvorssen said in a statement on Saturday, "Lopez obviously has the right to earn a living performing for the dictator of her choice and his circle of cronies, but her actions utterly destroy the carefully crafted message she has cultivated with her prior involvement with Amnesty International’s programs in Mexico aimed at curbing violence against women."

There was no word as to what Lopez was paid for the performance, or if she intends to keep the cash.

Chrissy Teigen Doesn't Care About Her Nip Slip: 'A Nipple Is A Nipple Is A Nipple'

Oct 11 2014 6:47am CDT | Source: Huffington Post

The year's most beautiful sheer-blouse, eyes-closed, on-the-grass photo definitely goes to supermodel Chrissy Teigen. But what she didn't realize at the time of posting it to Instagram was that her nipple was just as prominent as the face of her husband, John Legend. The 28-year-old, who made her debut in Sports Illustrated's annual Swimsuit Issue in 2010, doesn't seem to care. "A nipple is a nipple is a nipple. They are all the sa ...

Meredith Vieira's Talk Show Debut Was HILARIOUS

Sep 8 2014 3:07pm CDT | Source: Huffington Post

"The Meredith Vieira Show" made its debut Monday afternoon, and it was a roller coaster ride of daytime emotions: hilarity, celebrity activities, family crying and, of course, all the Meredith you could want. (And we love Meredith so we want lots of her.) The host spoke to a bright and energetic audience as her husband and daughter sat on a couch directly in front. The set was modeled to resemble her own home (her husband asked if he could have one ...

Amy Poehler's Emmy Dress 2014 Is A Sight To Be Seen

Aug 25 2014 6:31pm CDT | Source: Huffington Post

Amy Poehler may bring us to tear-induced laughter as a spokesperson for Old Navy, but on the red carpet, she has some serious style. We are always impressed with Ms. Poehler's glam factor, and anyone who can be just as funny in jeans as she can in a silver, sequined ball gown is pretty much our favorite person ever. Amy took a page out of Jennifer Lopez's VMA playbook for the 2014 Emmy Awards and totally rocked i ...
