Demi Lovato's Father Dies

Jun 24 2013, 11:24am CDT | by

Nino Munoz / FOX(LOS ANGELES) -- Demi Lovato lost her father over the weekend. Her rep tells E! News that Patrick Lovato has passed away. The cause of death is unclear.

On Saturday, Demi's older sister, Dallas Lovato, tweeted, "Rest in peace daddy I love you."

Demi had been estranged from her father, who reportedly battled cancer in recent years. Demi told the New York Daily News in 2009 that she hadn't spoken with him in a few years, saying, "[W]hen somebody lets you down after you've been the only one there for them, and so many times, you don't know what else to do."

Patrick Lovato divorced Demi's mother, Dianna De La Garza, in 1994.

The Daily News notes that Patrick Lovato was 53 at the time of his death.

The newspaper reports that Demi skipped an X Factor photo shoot on Saturday. Fellow judge Simon Cowell tweeted early Sunday, "My thoughts are with you Demi."

The show's host, Mario Lopez, wrote on Twitter, "My thoughts & prayers are with you @ddlovato...God bless you & your family."
