Lucy Lawless Sentenced to Community Service for Oil Ship Protest

Spartacus star Lucy Lawless has been ordered to pay a fine and complete 120 hours of community service after she pled guilty to trespassing charges stemming from a protest on a New Zealand oil ship, The Associated Press reports.

Bad guys we root for on TV

In February 2012, the Xena: Warrior Princess star and other Greenpeace activists climbed the ship's drilling tower to protest drilling for oil in the Arctic. The activists spent days on top of the tower, and Lawless blogged about the demonstration. Because the protest delayed the ship's drilling, the charter company, Shell Todd Oil Services, sought $545,000 in costs from the demonstrators, according to the AP.

But a New Zealand judge decided Thursday that the amount was excessive, and instead ordered the activists to each pay $547 and complete 120 hours of community service. Lawless said she considered the ruling "a great victory" and said she plans to continue her activism to work against oil drilling and climate change, the AP reports.
