Venturing into a new business

From executive producer Jennifer Lopez (wait, what?), ABC Family will be picking up a new drama series centered around a nontraditional family, as well as a mystery series about a 16-year-old who finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation.

Yes, now that Jennifer Lopez is officially not involved in any music reality competitions, she has turned her sights to something much more behind-the-scenes. And the ABC Family network is probably a perfect fit for her, as it has become the surprisingly dynamic home for a lot of new shows coming from people who haven't necessarily been involved in the nitty gritty of TV production before.

The drama show will be called The Fosters. It basically just follows the trials and tribulations of a family that consists of two mothers raising a mix of their own children as well as foster children. The household is also multi-ethnic.

The mystery series, Twisted, has a young boy who reconnects with a couple of his best friends from childhood, but the reminiscing and good feelings are short-lived as the boy suddenly becomes the prime suspect in the homicide of a fellow student.

"ABC Family is synonymous with groundbreaking storytelling and iconic characters. These new shows will bring the same depth, heart, close relationships and authenticity that our viewers have come to expect and, will pair nicely with our already established pop culture hits," said ABC Family president Michael Riley in a statement.

Production of both shows is set to begin in the spring. ABC Family is also expected to announce other new series for the next fall season in the coming weeks.
