Lindsey Vonn tumbled down an Austrian skiing course during the Alpine World Ski Championships on Feb. 5 when she crashed while competing in the super-G event. The crash caused the Olympic champion to suffer from two torn knee ligaments, and abruptly ended her skiing season.
The injuries require Lindsay to undergo reconstructive surgery on her knee.
Kyle Wilkens, the United States ski team’s medical director, said she tore the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in her right knee, according to the New York Times. She also has a tibial fracture in her shin. Even though the team revealed she wil be out for the rest of the season, they expect her to compete in the 2013-2013 World Cup season, which starts in October, and then the Sochi Olympics in February 2014.
Lindsey will fly back to Vail, Colo. for the surgery on her knee, U.S. Ski Team physician William Sterett said.
“She’ll be heading back to Vail and I will be doing surgery on her knee early next week,” he told The Associated Press on Feb. 6. ”Lindsey is doing well. She’s in good spirits.”
“Thank you for the amazing medical staff that care for me,” she said in a statement read on the Today show on Feb. 6. “I’m grateful for the fans for all of the support.” She also said she’s going to work as hard as “humanly possible” to return for the 2014 Olympics to represent her country.
We hope Lindsay makes a fast and safe recovery! Do YOU think she’ll compete in the Olympics HollywoodLifers?
