What to Watch Wednesday: Idol Hits Hollywood, SVU Hosts a Heavyweight, Arrow and More

On TV this Wednesday: American Idol sets up shop in Hollywood, CSI and CSI: NY embark on a cross-country crossover and Mike Tyson makes a controversial appearance on Law & Order: SVU. As a supplement to TVLine’s original features (linked within), here are 10 programs to keep on your radar.

8 pm American Idol (Fox) | The action moves to Hollywood as hopefuls vie for a spot in the semis.

8 pm Arrow (The CW) | David Anders (Once Upon a Time, Alias) guest-stars as Cyrus Vanch, a just-out-of-jail criminal who’s gunning for Arrow. But when Det. Lance makes a deadly mistake, Laurel winds up in Vanch’s crosshairs. Plus, a flashback to Oliver’s first dust-up with Deathstroke (see photos).

8 pm The Middle (ABC) | When Axl’s friends start receiving college-acceptance letters – and Axl doesn’t – Frankie and Mike worry that their son’s chances of getting a sports scholarship have passed him by. Roger Rees (Cheers, Elementary) guest-stars.

8 pm Whitney (NBC) | Monty Python alum John Cleese returns as couples’ counselor Dr. Grant, who gets Whitney and Alex on the couch after the latter lies to the former in an effort to carve out some alone time.

9 pm Law & Order: SVU (NBC) | Former boxer Mike Tyson plays a death-row inmate linked to a sexual abuse case Benson and the team are investigating. Ed Asner (Mary Tyler Moore) guest-stars and Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street) returns as Bayard Ellis. (Read why some people didn’t want Tyson in this episode at all.)

9 pm Criminal Minds (CBS) | When the daughters of a writer (thirtysomething‘s Ken Olin) whose wife mysteriously vanished go missing on the anniversary of their mother’s disappearance, the BAU eyeballs the dad as a suspect. (Check out photos of Thomas Gibson’s directing debut.)

9 pm Modern Family (ABC) | When the star of the Cam-directed school production of Phantom of the Opera falls ill, Manny stops at nothing to land the lead. Nathan Lane (The Producers) returns as Cam’s ex Pepper and Fred Willard (Best in Show) is back as Phil’s dad Frank.

9:30 pm Suburgatory (ABC) | Dallas and Dalia take a social tumble when, after realizing part of their property is located in East Chatswin, they’re forced to live like residents of that less affluent community.

10 pm The Americans (FX) | An uncooperative maid threatens to derail Philip and Elizabeth’s mission to plant a bug in Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger’s office. Meanwhile, Stan closes in on a member of the Soviet Rezidentura. Get preview from Keri Russell below:
