Fringe's John Noble Previews 'Remarkable' Walter/Peter Scenes and a Perfect Series Finale

Fringe Season 5 Spoilers

This Friday on Fringe — in the Fox’s drama’s antepenultimate hour — the team will track down September aka “Donald,” for better and for worse.

Because though September is in possession of missing pieces from the puzzle that has been Walter’s plan to defeat the Observers, it is quickly realized that with any such big win will come a large loss.

“We know there’s something that has to happen in order to beat the Observers,” John Noble shared during a conference call with reporters. “By now, we’ve built up to the fact that possibly maybe Walter has to do something pretty upsetting to make this happen.”

THE GOOD SON
With time running out and lives forever on the line, Fringe‘s final three episodes (the final two air on Jan. 18) will give fans something they never can get enough of — Bishoply bonding. (This Friday, for example, Walter volunteers to his son, “I never thought it possible I could love you more. But now I do.”)

“The way that [Walter's] relationship with Peter plays out in the next two episodes, and particularly in the finale, is really quite remarkable,” Noble effused. “I know that the fans love the relationship between Peter and Walter so much, and we certainly paid homage to that and brought it home, I believe, really strongly.” The actor said he has “beautiful moments” with Olivia and Astrid, as well.

A GRAND FINALE
Noble acknowledges that the cast was “apprehensive,” to say the least, about reading the script for the series finale, titled “An Enemy of Fate,” since expectations can be so high. But once delivered and consumed, it proved to be out of this (or any) world.

“I can honestly say that it was everything I had hoped it could possibly be,” he said. “It tied up our character lines, it tied up the great story arc…. I was extremely elated.”

So, does Fringe go out with a bang, as showrunner Joel Wyman has indicated? “It’s certainly going [out] with a bang,” Noble assured. “I hope history will judge it as one of the great finales of all time. I really believe they will.”

As for Walter’s individual fate, he allowed this: “If you had asked me in Season 1 where I thought Walter should finish up, it would have been exactly where he does. That’s the remarkable thing — it’s the perfect arc for Walter.” (With reporting by Vlada Gelman)
