The Queen has revealed that if William and Kate welcome a baby girl, she will be honored with the official title of princess! Read on for all the details.

We won’t know the gender of Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s baby until he or she is born this summer, but we do know two things for sure — the baby will be the next heir to the throne, and if they have a girl, she will be formally called princess.

Queen Elizabeth II issued a formal decree that if the royal couple has a baby girl, she will be given the title of princess. For a century, per a decree by King George V, only the eldest son of the Prince of Charles’ eldest son — so Prince William’s son — could have the title prince. So any daughter born to William and Kate would have been called “lady.”

But now, Her Majesty is making an important change for gender equality!

The Queen’s Official Decree

Queen Elizabeth signed the declaration on Dec. 31, although the London Gazette just released the news on Jan. 9.

“The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patentunder the Great Seal of the Realm dated 31 December 2012 to declare that all the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have and enjoy the style, title and attribute of royal highness with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names or with such other titles of honour.”

The Modern Monarchy: Changing Gender Equality

The new decree reflects major gender equality changes in the monarchy. Kate and William’s next child — boy or girl — will be the next heir to the throne, when previously it was only a male who could earn that honor.
