It seems like the two people who will join Mariah Carey as American Idol freshmen for the upcoming season will be Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban. Minaj’s placement had been all but confirmed earlier this week, but there was still some question as to who the other new judge would be.
It seemed like speculation was honing in on Kanye West, but given his polarizing personality – and the fact that him on the show would leak to a panel exclusively comprised of African Americans – it now seems like producers have nixed him from the decision table.
According to media reports, country star Keith Urban will take that final slot, making him the first icon from the world of country music to hold such a position. Urban had, however, previously shown his judging chops on The Voice.
For Minaj, it will be a crash course in telling other people how they sing on national TV. She will reportedly take home a cool $8 million for the season.
Urban has accepted a much more paltry $3 million – $4 million. Both of those are far below Carey, whose reported $18 million salary has already caused many to turn heads.
Meanwhile, veteran Randy Jackson seems to be comfortable taking his continued $6.5 million per year.
